Almighty God Is In Control
Thomas D. Dennis

Oh, what comfort it is to the saints just to know that God watches over His own and that He is able to intervene on their behalf at anytime that it is His will to do so. Is the world ignorant of this fact or is it that people simply choose to disregard the fact?

Any student of the Scriptures cannot help but be impressed by the numerous accounts of God’s hand in the wars of the Old Testament. God promised Israel that He would give them the land of Canaan and drive out the nations before them. It was not the mere shout of the people that caused the walls of Jericho to collapse, or the strength of Gideon’s 300 that defeated Midian. It was only after Samson asked the Lord to strengthen him that he dislocated the pillars that supported the Philistine temple. Time after time the Scriptures speak of God delivering Israel’s enemies into their hands. There were times that God made exception to the laws of nature that He had established at the time of creation. He sent the great flood because of the wickedness of humanity. The Red Sea divided and the water stood as walls on either side of the dry pathway while Israel passed through the sea. He destroyed Pharaoh’s army in the sea and the army of the Amorites with hailstones. He sent miraculous plagues and droughts. A shadow moved backward in the days of Hezekiah. The sun stood still in the midst of the heaven in the days of Joshua. God used both good and evil rulers to fulfill His divine will. A paramount example of this was in the case of Cyrus king of Persia who granted the Jews permission to return to their homeland. Decades before Cyrus was even born Isaiah had prophesied concerning this man, even by name, and Ezra 1 tells us that the Lord stirred the spirit of Cyrus and used him.

Repeatedly the Scriptures tells us that “The Most High rules in the kingdom of men” (Daniel 4:17, 25. 32, 5:21) and that “He removes kings and raises up kings” (Daniel 2:21).

Knowing the record of the past, Is there any reason for us to believe that God is not involved in such matters today? Do we not believe that God had a part in the founding of our nation in a time when there was a lack of religious freedom in Europe?

Did not those men of the Constitutional Convention seek the guidance of God in forming our Constitution and government? James Madison’s idea of our three branches of government was from Isaiah 33:22 and principles of the Bible were considered in the formation of our laws.

As recently as World War II, was there no evidence of God’s providence? Europe was being overrun by a cruel dictator. Millions were being slain. In spite of the military odds that were against us, with trust in the Lord, our nation was able to bring deliverance to the European allies. And consider Israel’s wars in 1948 and again in 1967. Both were so sensational that comments were made comparing them to wars of the Old Testament when the Jews were so outnumbered, but by divine intervention defeated their enemies.

We know that in times past God has used nations to chastise and punish a nation for its sins, sometimes using a nation more evil that the one being punished. With the morals of our society sinking to abortion, homosexuality, gambling, adultery and every other vice and sin, things which God has warned will bring His righteous wrath, is there no fear of God? Is there no realization that our nation is in danger? “Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all nations that forget God” (Psalms 9:10).

To many people, life is about indulgence, pleasure and recreation. Even religion is perverted in our nation today. Doctrines absolutely foreign and sometimes even contradictory to the Holy Scriptures are being taught. Many churches seem to be more involved with social events and entertainment than with preaching the gospel.

Can it be that the current storms and floods and fires and earthquakes and wars, etc., are intended to wake our nation up to its guilt of sin and its need for God?

Consider the ambition of the Muslim nations to overthrow the United States and to dominate the world. If God should allow that to be done because of our sins, the freedom of religion which we now take so much for granted would surely be taken from us.

May God help true Christians to turn our nation back to God before it is too late. He is still in control.
