Volume 49 Number 5 May 2007
Since I have been reading the Bible, I have been paying more attention to those that have not read the Bible. To my surprise and dismay there are many. Most just go on what others have told them. It is a shame because it puts them at risk of losing the very thing that they are seeking. One such person lately told me that “You only had to believe in God and Jesus and act right to be saved.” This sentiment is found on the communication systems of today, but as you know that is not all there is to it.
What is right? If you don’t read and study what the Lord has recorded then how can you know what is right or righteous? I didn’t. Why did God spend the time and effort to have His words put down on paper? Why did He put them in stone? He put some responsibility on us to know Him. He gave us free will and we must use it on His behalf if we want to live in His house. You have to know the house rules.
God is supposed to be a loving God. But what about your love to Him? If you love Him then you will honor Him by obeying His rules. The Bible is full of people that He killed or had killed. (He does have the power of life and death.) They are the ones who turned their backs on the Lord. He is the maker of this creation and He will not share the glory with any other.
We can learn so many basic lessons about God by going back to the Law, which was the schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, Who came to fulfill the Law. There are many subjects in Deuteronomy but I will only cover one here due to space requirements. That subject is idols. I will let the Bible speak for itself, therefore I will not be adding to or taking away from the Word of God.
“So God created man in his image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
“Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you. If you make an altar of stone for me, DO NOT build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it.” (Exodus 20:24- 26)
“He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool then they said “These are your gods, 0 Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.” (Exodus 32:4)
“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, 0 Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’” (Exodus 32:7-8)
“Then the Lord said to Moses ‘Tell the Israelites this, you have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven; Do not make any gods to be alongside me, do not make for yourselves god of silver or gods of gold.” (Exodus 20: 22-23)
“Cursed is the man who carves an image or casts an idol--a thing detestable to the Lord, the work of the craftsman hands - and sets it up in secret.” (Deuteronomy 1: 15)
“You saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, or like any creature that moves along the ground.” (Deuteronomy 4: 15)
I believe that these verses clearly give you the mind of the Lord on idols. I do not write this for those who have read and studied the word of God, but for those who have not. I hope that reading this might influence you to seek more. That’s what the Lord wants: For all people to seek Him. God gives salvation free but we must make sure of our eligibility. This is where the work comes into play. We must not accept just another man’s words but verify by the Holy Scriptures. You face Judgment Day by yourself. On that Day, the sentencing will be carried out; but the trial of your love is this very day.
Brothers and sisters, I ask you to join me to help each other reach that goal. That is why God created the church because He knew that it would be easier for us if we helped each other. God must love us greatly to go through all the trouble of informing us and sending down His Son to become the way.
