 Hidden On The Back Pages

Thomas W. Woody

Lots of people enjoy reading the daily news to stay informed on current events. Newspapers report the news for us, and in the process of going through the different events that occur each day, editorial decisions are made to determine which items are most important and worthy of a spot on the front page - maybe even the lead story!

The rest of the events will then be reported in order of priority, so the least important news items, if they make it into the paper at all, will be tucked deep inside the paper where only the most dedicated readers will venture. Though readers may not always agree with the editorial staff’s judgment, the placement of a story in a newspaper is considered an indication of how important the news really is to the average person.

If the presses had been running when Jesus was raised from the dead nearly 2,000 years ago, how do you suppose the earth-shaking event would have been covered? Facts of the story included the crucifixion, the darkness in the middle of the day, the earthquake and the empty tomb, but it would have taken a hungry reporter to go beyond the rumors and hearsay to find the real story that God had actually come to His own people - and they knew Him not. Now THAT would be front page news indeed!

Isaiah asked a long time ago, “Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?” If the good news was reported in the newspaper, who would believe it? How many editors would hide the story inside the paper - or let it lead with a huge headline?

So where might a newspaper today report the good news of salvation in Christ Jesus? A miner trapped below the surface in a mine and then rescued is big news. How much bigger is the news that Jesus saved a multitude from the depths of Hell?

We may not be editors of a newspaper, but each day we decide what the lead story of our life is going to be. Don’t hide the gospel somewhere on the back pages of your life. Put the good news of Jesus Christ on the front page of your life!
