Honor
David Hartman

As the Gillespie High School chorus walked onto the gymnasium floor, the large crowd became silent in anticipation of the singing of the national anthem. It was impressive to see this crowd, who had assembled to watch the Macoupin County championship game, come to order and honor the flag and our country without any prompting from the public address announcer.

The Scriptures teach us that honor is due to others as well:

To Widows -

“Honor widows that are widows indeed.”~ I Timothy 5:3

To the Elderly -
“Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men
    as brethren;” ~ I Timothy 5:1

To our Parents-
“Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with
    promise;)” ~ Ephesians 6:2

To All Men -

“Honor all men ...” ~ I Peter 2:17

To the King -

“ ... Honor the king. ” ~ I Peter 2:17

To Christ/God -

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for
thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were
created.” “And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and
under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them,
heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto him
that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.” ~
    Revelation 4:11; 5:13

While this is only a partial listing of the verses on honor, they are very representative of the other New Testament verses on this subject. We might summarize these and other verses by saying that it is clearly the Will of God that each of us honor the family and those in positions of civil authority and spiritual authority (God and Christ)
