What do we think about when we think about pathways? We are all on a pathway of some kind or another. This is where everyone of us needs to be careful of which one we choose to go down. We need to be aware of this sobering question daily: Am I going down the right path, or am I going down the wrong path?
God gives us the opportunity to choose which one we think we need to go down, but we are also subject to getting led off the right one. We all need to ask God for help so that we can choose correctly. David ask God for help on several occasions, such as in Psalms 23:3: “He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His names sake.”
Let’s ask ourselves a question when we are going through life: Do we choose the easy path or the one that is not so easy? This is my thought on this, and keep in mind I have experienced going the wrong path. I seem to lean going down the easy one, but sometimes this can lead to destruction of well being. Think about how cattle, or we can also say wildlife, seem to get in a routine of going down the same path everyday. And by doing this they make a pathway, and over the years of doing the same thing the ground gets trodden down and it starts washing away with the rain and pretty soon you’ve got yourself erosion. And this is not good at all, but you can look at it in a spiritual way also erosion leads to destruction. This is why we need to trust fully in the Lord to lead us down the right paths!
Let’s look at the way David trusts the Lord. In
2 Samuel 22:37: “You enlarge my path under me; So my feet don’t slip.” And in Psalms 16:11, “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your hand are pleasures forevermore.” This scripture tells me that God is in control and He will help us go down the right pathways of life if we let Him!Another way that God helps us in keeping on the right path is through the Bible. Reading the Bible sure helps me in more ways than one in figuring out how to stay on the right path, because Satan has filled this world with so many different paths, and the Bible is the way to fight Satan. David depended on the Lord to teach him and lead him. We can find David saying this in
Psalms 27:11, “Teach me Your way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.” I can see this is the same way we need to be to fight the wiles of this world. This verse also teaches me that God is always there for us if we let Him! Again in Psalms25:4-5 “Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.”We also should know that God knows the paths we are going to choose because God knows our hearts. In
Psalms 139:3-4, “You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” You can see the Lord takes care of us in ways that we don’t even think about, but He does expect us to do some of the work ourselves. I found that staying away from wickedness is a very good way to keep on the right path, just as Solomon said in Proverbs 4:14,15, “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.” also know that in today’s world there seems to be more and more wickedness going on. We read in Isaiah 59:8, “The way of peace they have not known, And there is no justice in their ways; They have made themselves crooked paths; Whoever takes that way shall not know peace.” These scriptures make it pretty clear to me to stay alert on what I’m supposed to be doing, and staying on the right path. The scriptures also tell me that God knew we were going to have trouble staying on the right paths, so He sent Jesus to help us and He also sent John the Baptist to help start the path for Jesus. In Matthew 3:3 we read, “For this is he that who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’” Another good way to stay on the right path is to stay in the light and Jesus is our light! Jesus tells us to stay on that right path so that we can get through the narrow gate. Look at Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter by the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. “Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and they are few who finds it.” It is my prayer that everyone can get on the right path, so that we all have the everlasting life which is promised. (Read John 3:3-6, 16; also John 6:40, 47.)
