In baseball or softball we use the expression “Good eye” when one of our batters lays off or doesn’t swing at a ball thrown outside the strike zone. Being able to see the ball spells the difference between success and failure in the batter’s box!
If we read God’s Holy Scripture beginning in Matthew 6:19-34 we can see that Christ wants us to have a “Good eye” spiritually. In verse 22 and 23 we read, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. If your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
The Christian with a good spiritual eye is able to set his affection on heavenly things which is eternal rather than earthly things which are temporary. We tend to worry way too much about earthly things money can buy. Don’t forget, if we set our affections on heavenly things our earthly worries will be a lot less. If we put God first, the necessities of life God will provide us.
The apostle Paul wrote to Timothy in I Timothy 6:1-7 that “Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world and we can take nothing out of it.”
Jesus Christ is warning us to stay focused on being prepared for eternity. Remember our souls are eternal and our fleshly bodies are temporary. Have a “Good eye” for that which is everlasting. Read, study and know what God requires of you. “Humble yourselves, therefore under God’s mighty hand that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (I Peter 5:6 & 7)
