Objections To The Faith ~ Part Five
(I Peter 3:15; Jude 3)
Thomas W. Woody

Is The Bible The Word of God?

If the honest soul admits that we have a Creator, it must follow that we are obligated to the One Who made us. Though men have made their own idols, the eternal truth is that we did not make God, He made us.

How do we know about His nature? How can we find out about His purpose for creating us? Surely the God of the universe has revealed these things to us. Where can we go to find out this vital information?

Consider the Bible, also known as the Holy Scriptures; the Book of books which claims to be inspired by the God of the universe (2 Timothy 3:16). Though men have made fun of it, scoffed at it, contradicted it, and even burned it, the Bible is still with us today and contains the same eternal truth that it always has. It is truly the anvil that has worn out the hammers of skeptical men. One noted scholarly opponent of the Bible claimed back in the 1700’s that one day the Bible would no longer be on the scene as far as mankind was concerned. But what actually happened after his grand pronouncement was that the great scholar was no longer on the scene (he died), and his own house was later used to print Bibles.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” (Matthew 24:35)

The Bible doesn’t really take up a lot of print to try to persuade you that it is the Word of God. Men and women are converted to the Lord simply by hearing the inspired writings and experiencing the surgical operation of the living and powerful Word of God as its truths prick the hearts of the hearers! Consider the man whose profession was to translate from one language to another: he took a job translating the Bible into his own language, though he himself did not believe in God. Yet in the course of reading the inspired text, he came to have faith in the One, true, and living God. When asked what converted him, he explained that when he read the Bible, it was as though the writer was intimately acquainted with him; “The author of this Book knew me.”

You open the Bible and the very first thing you read about answers some of the most basic questions of life; “Where did I come from?” and “How did I get here?” God, in His mercy, has provided an easy to read account of the Creation in Genesis Chapter 1. How tragic it is that many men reject the Lord’s explanation of how we got here and waste the breath God gave them on their own explanation for the universe. People will quickly forget all about their “Big Bang” theory when they have to give an account for their futile lives to the Almighty God of the universe. Please read about how we were created from the One Who created you, not from those who constantly change their minds!

The greatest enemies of the Bible are not atheists and worldly men. On the contrary, the greatest damage done to the Book has always been done by those who pretend to be the “friends” of the Bible. Religious leaders, in their attempts to suppress the truth in their unrighteousness and to be friends with the world, are the ones who have offered the most clever and subtle attacks on the Bible. “Higher criticism” has made a shipwreck of the faith of many individuals intimidated by uninspired, yet persuasive words. When an unbeliever scoffs at the Bible, at least you know where he is coming from and are on guard. But when a “preacher” or a “Doctor of Divinity” speaks against the Scriptures, it is quoted and accepted by many unwitting sheep. We must not be deceived when a religious person chips away at the solid rock of truth we find in the Word of God.

Surprisingly, there is a benefit gained from the attacks made on the Bible down through the ages. Infidels who lived at or near the time of the inspired writers of the New Testament Scriptures did not believe most of what was being taught therein, but they never denied the authorship of the individual books. At the close of the second century, Celsus, an Epicurean philosopher, wrote a work against Christianity, most of which has been preserved by Origen’s reply to it. Celsus not only mentions by name, but also quotes from the books of the New Testament, so it is evident that we have the same books from which he quoted. He does not hint that the books, which the Christians considered as inspired, were forgeries, but he endeavors to show from the facts themselves that they are unworthy of belief. If he, living less than a century this side of the apostles, could not disprove the genuineness of the New Testament books how can we, who live twenty centuries this side of the inspired men? This testimony of Celsus is very important today, for it shows us that infidels in the second century dared not try to disprove the genuineness of the books of the New Covenant, the very thing which infidels of today think they have done. Porphyry, born in the year 233, and Julian the Apostate, Emperor of Rome from 361-363 A.D., were two other enemies of the faith who never denied the books or authors of the New Testament Scriptures, though they opposed the doctrine. These three great opposers of Christ’s religion in the second, third and fourth centuries should have great weight with skeptics in deciding for the genuineness of the books, which are in our present canon.1

Jesus said in John 7:16 &17, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.” This passage shows us that in order for us to know and understand the doctrine, we must have a willingness to do the Will of God. All the arguments in the world will never persuade until we humble ourselves and become willing to obey our Creator. When we aren’t willing to obey, we cannot accept what we hear from anyone, let alone the Bible. Are you willing to do His Will?

Truly, the Bible is worthy of the name, “The Book of books”, and the more you read it for yourself, the more you will agree with its name. But if you are willfully ignorant and refuse to find out more about the doctrine contained in the Holy Scriptures, you will smugly continue on in disobedience until it is too late. Please don’t refuse what your Creator has given us in the Bible: Read it and live!
